One option for model railroad layouts is to use something called “modules.” Modules are a fixed length, width and height by a standard that is universally acceptable. For example, NTRAK modules are multiples of two feet long, although a lot of them are four feet long, by approximately two feet wide.

The underside of the module has a lot of electronics to make the locomotives run, and it holds the legs that fold up under it when it is being moved, and are extended when you are setting up the layout, such as at a show, or back at home.
