What couplers do you use?
Normally i use Fleischmann Profi couplers for all my model trains, but on my Russian trains i would like to use something closer to the real thing. I have tried Kadee couplers of both long, medium, and short length. Yesterday i also tried Roco's "decorative" SA3 couplers. But they all have the same problem: they hit the buffers on my passenger cars.
So what kind of couplers do the members of this fine forum use on their passenger trains? Have you had any problems with them on curves and switches? Which would you recommend i get? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: What couplers do you use?
My choice - roco 40270 close coupler for european rolling stock and for russian passenger cars. Imho Fleischmann Profi is visualy too large.
But for russian cargo trains (you know, cargo rolling stock in Russia have not buffers) I think the best choice is a Kadee couplers. It can be installed into NEM pocket, it looks like SA-3 and it is working
For your passenger trains you can use Roco/Fleischmann couplings between couches and 1-2 roco SA-3 on the front of the locomotive and on the tail car.

Re: What couplers do you use?
I support Vasiliy!
As for me - I use for close coupling between long passanger cars Roco 40270 . On the locomotives - Kadee. And on the first passanger car from locomotive side - Kadee to couple with loco. Usually it is #18. And on the freight cars - different Kadee.
Regards,
Ivan

Re: What couplers do you use?
I use Roco "Goldorak" Universal 40395 for all my waggons and cars because of its compatibilty with old style coupers (for exemple Roco 40243). I think they are more durable in case of frequent coupling/decoupling of the rolling stock.
Kadee (IMHO) are not suitable at all if the rollig stock that have buffers and a short coupling mechanisms. But they are really excellent for rolling stock without buffers, i. e. russian or, for exemple, american.

Re: What couplers do you use?
Personally i chose the Profi couplers after recommendations from friends as they are very reliable, something i have been told that the Roco couplers are not. I haven't actually tried the Roco 40270 couplers yet, i think, but i do have a whole bunch of them at home from cars i've changed couplers on. I might give that a try.
Anyway, i do have a few Kadee couplers at home as well. But when it comes to freight trains, which i don't have any yet, i was thinking of atleast trying to use the Roco SA3 couplers. They may be meant to be decorative, but you can couple them together. But if that doesn't work, well, then it's Kadee. That much i know.
I am aware of that, but i have always wondered why it's like that. In the US, Canada, and Mexico they also have "knuckle" style couplers, but no buffers on any rolling stock.

No problems with the buffers there?ivan писал(а):On the locomotives - Kadee. And on the first passanger car from locomotive side - Kadee to couple with loco. Usually it is #18.
Ok. I've never tried those, but i did get two similar ones when i bought my only Märklin locomotive. Might give them a try.AlexK писал(а): I use Roco "Goldorak" Universal 40395 for all my waggons and cars because of its compatibilty with old style coupers (for exemple Roco 40243). There's one other member in the model train club i'm in who runs Russian trains, and he has actually removed the buffers from his passenger cars in order to use Kadee couplers, normally using one long and one short between each two cars.AlexK писал(а):Kadee (IMHO) are not suitable at all if the rollig stock that have buffers and a short coupling mechanisms. Re: What couplers do you use?
Hi Swede,
All long cars have a problem with following in an all curve tracks. Inventors have made a decision: toggle-rocker mechanism on car housing instead of "coupling in bogie" long time ago. So before replacement any coupling You must set mechanism onto your car (coach) housing. You can choose and order one of this device as you wish.
Alike devices is produced by Roco (https://www.roco.cc/en/product/22607-0- ... ducts.html), Fleischmann, Weinert-modellbau, etc.
After that You'll choose any coupling: Kadee, ROCO-40375 (https://www.roco.cc/en/product/39765-0- ... ducts.html), ROCO-40376 (https://www.roco.cc/en/product/149412-0 ... ducts.html)... and many other Willison-style couplings (like SA-3).

Re: What couplers do you use?
Have you tried Kadee # 17-20? Preferably number 20, it is the longest.

You can try small-series couplers, produce in Russia.
http://modelena.ru/tiporazmer_HO/raznoe_2009/t9529.html
As well as rigid couplers from Bachman China series from passenger car
http://www.chinesemodeltrains.com/encyc ... _rw22.html
https://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/216915/ ... 25124_orig
But it is problematic to buy them both.
This is correct, but Roco 40343 for car up 140 mm, 40344 for car from 140 up 170 mm only.
And usually, there is no need to buy separately Close coupling mechanism retrofit set. Most passenger and freight cars from Bachmann China, Heris and Roco and others already have an integrated mechanism.

The problem is another: different manufacturers make different lengths of couplers. On pair of interchangeable couplers this difference can go up to millimeters. And coupling heads on close coupling mechanism (Kupplungsköpfe) not made according to the NEM362 standard http://morop.de/downloads/nem/de/nem362_d.pdf
Therefore, it is possible to work incorrectly and long cars too close to each other.
The way out of the situation is as follows:
either extend the tail of the exchangeable couplings,
or extend the head on the dynamic mechanics.

Re: What couplers do you use?
Hej Swede,
Roco and Märklin couplers are slightly different, even if it couple good one to another. Märklin couplers are slightly higher when coupled, and that can cause problems with some non-Märklin cars, LS Models or REE for example.
Fleischmann Profi you use or Roco Harpoon recommended by Василий have no such problems. So as Roco Goldorak.

Re: What couplers do you use?
@старина_U: As И.К.С. already mentioned, my cars do already have close coupling mechanisms, so that's no problem. I'm looking for tips on what type of couplers are the best for Russian models. But i appreciate your tip.
@И.К.С.: I have tried Kadee #17-19, but that was on passenger cars. I don't own any Russian freight cars yet, so that's a future problem.
Unfortunately it seems these are sold out. And looking at the Bachmann couplers, they seem too short to use on passenger cars.
@AlexK: And problems are exactly what i am trying to avoid.
